A fair amount of insight into the living spaces

Communal apartments, евроремонт - two extremes of living in Russia. Former represents soviet effort to provide workers with living spaces and overcome bourgeois habits of having dinner in dinning room, working in the office, and see patients in приемная (see Heart of the Dog, by Bulgakov). The latter represents desire of new Russians to overcome inertia of the Soviet standard living, including color, placement of furniture and types of decoration.
I am not going to go into details about how I didactisize these materials. I guess it is up to one's creativity and goals of one's course, I will just provide these wonderful links.
Here you will find an abundance of interesting material about communal living both in Russian and English.
Kvartirnyj vopros is a great help in your effort to show students what is happening with apartments these days in Russia.
In the end, I recommend to weave in Duna's early work ,which is a catchy song with some nice illustrations of дружная семья!

Hipsters 2008 (Стиляги)

All right, guys!
It is time to suck up some culture. We are heading toward all-inclusive curricular, i.e. my syllabus is not grammar based anymore...I mean, there departmental requirements, right? But you can get access to a lot more interesting stuff that just grammar via the tools you already have!
This is a nice, slightly exaggerated portrayal of hipsters' movement in 50s in Russia .
English subtitles are in place, as well as wonderful songs, which you will probably want to have on your ipods!
